Cam Mitchell – CEO, Cricket Wellington

We're currently using the deck with the team at Cricket Wellington. Cam Mitchell is the CEO of the CW team and is a passionate people-centred leader. He said this about his experience using the decks with his team over the past 12 months.

"Were using the Emotional Culture deck to support our aspiration of creating outstanding cricket experiences for the people of Wellington. A positive team culture with high levels of employee engagement is critical to us delivering our aspiration.

The thing I love the most about using the decks with our team is that it provides a deep insight into the key emotional drivers for staff (positive and negative). This understanding of self and others supports the creation of an environment that is people focussed, and driving better external outcomes.

It’s helped us ensure all team members are ’active players” as we strive to be the most committed, passionate and customer focussed regional sports organisation in New Zealand."

Chris Nevin, ex-New Zealand Cricketer, is the Pathways Manager at Cricket Wellington. Chris now looks after the programmes for all representative teams in the Wellington region. After a recent session using the decks he had this to say:

"I loved it. It was different to anything I had done in the past when it comes to a culture. I’ve been to a lot of culture sessions, and you turn up at them with an expectation of what keywords you’re going to write up on a whiteboard and then all buy into. This was nothing like that. Previously culture sessions I’ve been involved in have all been about finding key works that embody how the team want to be viewed - passionate, committed invariably come up as keywords, but they mean different things to different people. This was about finding keywords relevant to the individual and what those words mean to them. It was about how an individual wanted to and didn’t want to feel, rather than words that had to fit everyone.

The thing I found most useful was that not only could I identify how I did and didn’t want to feel when I came to work, but I also got an understanding of how the people I will be working with did and didn’t want to feel when they are at work. It means you can set up a tailored working environment that will benefit everyone. It may take more time to set it up, but the benefits will be much greater.

We’ll now have a greater understanding of what motivates people to do the best they can for the organisation, and conversely what environment will make achieving goals more difficult.

Using the deck will help us create an environment where people feel valued, where their opinions matter, where how they feel is important to the organisation they work for."

In my experience, I don’t think much emphasis has been placed on how people want to feel when they come to work. The Emotional Culture Deck has the ability to transform that, and in this day and age, the mental well-being of employees plays a huge part in how effective they will be at work."
